Organ Music / Music for Pipes
Theme for Organ

Commission:
Commissioned by Felix Aprahamian as Secretary of The Organ Music Society.
Notes:
One of four themes submitted to André Marchal (blind organist of St. Germaine-des-Près in Paris) for the improvisation of a four movement work in the form of a symphony. Other contributors were Benjamin Britten, Constant Lambert and William Walton.
The themes were printed for The Organ Music Society by Boosey & Hawkes.

These pieces were written for Jack Armstrong, a Northumbrian pipes virtuoso, who met Alan Bush, during the composition of 'Men of Blackmoor'. Richard Butler was a pupil of Jack Armstrong.
A version for oboe and piano also exists - Northumbrian Impressions for Oboe and Piano (Op. 42a).
