Sonatina for Viola and Piano, Op. 88 (1978)

1. A Tempo Moderato - Allegro Moderato
2. Quasi Menuetto
3. Allegro Vivace - A Tempo Di Introduzione

An improvisatory introduction leads to the first movement in sonata form. The second movement suggests a slow minuet and trio; the triple time consists, however, of unequal beats with the time signature 3/8 + 2/8 + 3/8. The finale is a rondo with two episodes; the coda refers back to the introduction and closing thought of the first movement.

The work was commissioned by the Viola Research Society and its first private performance was given at the Congress, on 10th June 1978 in London with Cecil Aronowitz (viola) and Alan Bush (piano).
